LOW COUNTRY DANCE

                                          low country dance

Low Country Dance is a traditional folk dance from the Low Country region of Sri Lanka, which mainly includes the coastal areas like Galle, Matara, and Hambantota.

This dance is closely connected with local rituals, festivals, and community celebrations.

One of the main features of Low Country Dance is the use of colorful masks and costumes. Dancers wear specially designed masks to represent different demons and characters. The movements are energetic and expressive, often performed to the rhythm of traditional drums like the Yak Bera.

Famous rituals such as Sanni Yakuma, Kolam dance, and Bali ceremonies belong to this tradition. These performances combine dance, drama, and music, making them unique and meaningful.

Low Country Dance is important because it preserves Sri Lanka’s cultural heritage and reflects the beliefs and traditions of the people. It continues to be performed today as both a ritual and a cultural art form.

Thank you.
